Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Your Kilimanjaro climbing adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, followed by a scenic drive to Marangu Gate, the starting point of the famous Marangu Route. Upon arrival, you will complete the necessary registration formalities while our mountain crew organizes the equipment and prepares for the trek. After meeting your mountain guides and receiving a short briefing, your journey to the roof of Africa officially begins.

The first day takes you through the beautiful tropical rainforest, where towering trees, lush vegetation, and the sounds of forest wildlife create a wonderful introduction to Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail is generally well established, with a gradual ascent that allows you to settle into the trekking rhythm. Keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys and other wildlife that inhabit this forest environment.

After approximately 4–5 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m), where you will spend your first night on the mountain. Your mountain crew will prepare a freshly cooked dinner, and you will have time to relax, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and prepare for the next stage of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

After breakfast at Mandara Hut, you will continue your Kilimanjaro climb towards Horombo Hut, leaving the rainforest behind as the landscape gradually changes into open moorland. The trail passes through beautiful vegetation, including giant heathers and distinctive mountain plants that make this section of the Marangu Route particularly scenic.

As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes less dense, opening up spectacular views of the surrounding mountain landscape. On clear days, you may enjoy impressive views of Mawenzi Peak and the magnificent Kibo summit ahead. Your guide will maintain a comfortable walking pace, allowing you to gradually adjust to the increasing altitude while enjoying the breathtaking scenery.

After approximately 5–7 hours of trekking, you will reach Horombo Hut (3,720m), a beautiful mountain camp situated on an open ridge overlooking the surrounding landscape. Upon arrival, you will settle into your accommodation, enjoy a warm meal prepared by your mountain crew, and spend the evening resting. This is also where you will spend an additional night for acclimatization.

Day 3 · Thursday, 19 November 2026

Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Today is dedicated to acclimatization, an important part of your six-day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro climb. Rather than continuing directly to a higher camp, you will spend an additional night at Horombo Hut, giving your body more time to adjust to the altitude. Proper acclimatization is essential when climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, as it helps your body adapt to the reduced oxygen levels at higher elevations.

After breakfast, you will enjoy a guided acclimatization hike towards Zebra Rocks, a distinctive geological feature named after its striking black-and-white appearance. The hike provides an opportunity to explore the surrounding alpine landscape while gradually exposing your body to higher elevations. Your guide will monitor your condition throughout the walk and advise you on maintaining a comfortable pace.

Following the acclimatization hike, you will return to Horombo Hut for lunch and a relaxing afternoon. You can enjoy the incredible mountain views, take photographs, and spend time preparing for the next stage of the journey. Your guide will also provide important advice about hydration, altitude awareness, and the upcoming summit preparation. Dinner and overnight will be at Horombo Hut.

Elevation: 3,720m (acclimatization hike towards approximately 4,000m)

Day 4 · Friday, 20 November 2026

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,703m)

After breakfast, you will leave Horombo Hut and continue your ascent towards Kibo Hut, the final base camp before attempting the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Today's trek takes you across the dramatic alpine desert landscape, where vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and the environment feels more rugged and remote. You will walk through the saddle between the impressive Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, one of the most remarkable sections of the Marangu Route.

The trail is relatively gradual but becomes more challenging as you gain altitude. Your guides will encourage a slow and steady walking rhythm, commonly known as pole pole, which is essential for conserving energy and helping your body adjust to the thinner air. Along the way, you will experience breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain terrain while approaching the towering Kibo summit.

After approximately 5–7 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Kibo Hut (4,703m). Here, you will have an early dinner and receive a detailed briefing from your mountain guides about the summit attempt. You will be advised to get some rest before waking up around midnight for the final ascent. This is an important night, as your journey towards Uhuru Peak begins in just a few hours.

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Descent to Horombo Hut

Your summit adventure begins around midnight after a light snack and hot drinks. Equipped with warm clothing, headlamps, and determination, you will begin the challenging night ascent towards Gilman's Point (5,681m). The trail follows a steep and demanding path across rocky terrain and loose volcanic scree. Although this is one of the toughest sections of the entire Kilimanjaro climb, your experienced mountain guides will support and encourage you throughout the ascent.

As the first light of dawn appears over the African horizon, you will approach the crater rim and reach Gilman's Point. From here, you will continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Standing beside the famous summit sign is an unforgettable achievement, offering spectacular views across the surrounding glaciers and vast African landscapes. Take photographs, celebrate your accomplishment, and enjoy this extraordinary moment at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, weather and conditions permitting.

After celebrating your summit success, you will begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut. The long descent can be demanding on your legs, but reaching Horombo Hut marks the end of an incredible summit day. Your mountain crew will welcome you with a warm meal, and you will enjoy a well-deserved rest after one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
